Can you form part numbers from drom down menu's?

I have product with multiple options and instead of listing them all by individual part number I would like to configure them by using the drop down menu's (attributes).

This would allow the customer to choose the configuration of the component.

I would then like this configuration to generate a part number from a list of known part numbers.

Does anyone know if this can be acheived?

You could have each component relate to another product.

That would then give you the part number spead over several products.

No too sure how this would look in the checkout page though...
