Messy HTML - is there a table-less version

Has anyone out there (or even Actinic?) developed a as close to html valid and table-less design?

As a standards-conscious Web developer the thought of putting my name with the eventual design my clients store will have makes me shudder!

Hi Mathieu - in another thread I think you say you are now using the theme as created by Chris.

Have you managed to strip out all the tables on your site? I looked at the ACD months back and it still seemed to carry tables in several of the templates I looked at. If it is your main site this is still showing tables - although can't dig too deep as need a username etc.

Just interested as in the process of trying to remove all tables for CSS layout - managed to get the Act_Primary, Act_ProductLine and Act_BrochurePrimary free of tables so far ... just the Search and Cart to look at tomorrow.

OK confession time:

I didn't get rid of tables completely - because there are some places where they work better than divs - such as listing the fields in the checkout.

Which is the whole point of tables. CSS and accessability guides support tables for tabular data... just not their use for page layout. Think I will be wrapping the checkout table into a <div> to allow better formatting and positioning but will keep the table as you say for the actual cart info.

Have now managed to remove ALL tables other than in the cart (I still have one in the search results page but I have not tackled that template yet).

Chris D - if I can make a suggestion for future cart templates (if you already haven't implemented for v8) - having just ploughed through the Act_Order"n" templates cleaning out the BGCOLOR and <span> codes specifying the font sizes it would be a lot cleaner to <div id="X"> the various cart templates and use td, th etc as childs to set a standard font size and background colours and <span class="X"> where you need specific form emphasis etc.
