How many products are too many?

We have been using Actinic for a number of e-commerce sites and we have never had many problems.

    However...

We have recently designed a site which houses at present about 1000 to 1200 products and we are having major problems with it.

We design the site over here and give a snap shot to our client and they are always having problems with ftp. The ftp of a site can take up to 4 hours.

We keep getting server incompatible errors even though we are both running the same version of Actinic and so many merge request errors its unbelieveable.

The problems we are encountering here really are affecting us as we have to spend days trying to sort these problems out and are getting well behind on other work.

Has anybody else experienced such problems when a) dealing with such a large site and/or b) experienced such problems when sharing snapshots between two machines.

Any help, advice or valium would be appreciated!

Only had it once. They were using dialup at home to work on the site which kept dropping the connection - they only had 300 products and it was taking 2 hrs. They gave up in the end and moved the shop onto a laptop which they could take into the workshop to upload using a broadband connection.

A lot of sites have many more products but depends partly on the size of images each product has amongst other. How large is the snapshot? You can work out the estimated download time with the connection rate and the file size - 4 hours seems a very long time - as Malcolm says are they on dialup? That will take an age on even a modest ACD transfer.

Are the same versions at the same patch version also? It may be worth sending them a complete copy of the site1 folder and not a snapshot as this will pick up any changes to the scripts.

1200 products is not a large site, but why would you be uploading to the site? You pass them the snapshot and they do all the uploading, surely - so your version should have nothing to do with the server errors.

You don't say what type of connection they have, whether there is a router involved, what anti-virus may be interfering eith the process, how large the 1200 image files are...

If you have eliminated router and anti-virus from the possible causes, and they have a suitable internet connection, it may be worthwhile running Help | Troubleshooting | Website Purge & Refresh from the client machine and then if that does not help, contacting Actinic Support and sending them a snapshot.

I have around 3000 products and do get merge errors If I use two different computers for uploads. As soon as I confined uploads to one pc all the problems ceased.

          Hope this helps.
