Getting Actinic to work with Fasthosts on a Windows Server

I have actinic installed on a windows 2003 box with FashHosts. This was the first time I had used actinic. I just came to set up another site on a Fast Hosts windows server, I could not get this to work at all.

The site that works is hosted on a domain that has asp enabled.

The site that did not work does not have asp enabled.

I am guessing that the directory permission for asp enabled sits is different to site that do not have asp enabled

Can any one confirm that having asp enabled allows actinic to run on FastHosts windows environments ?

    Thanks Andy

I have just tried another site, this one has asp.net enabled.

This site, like the first site (that also has asp enabled) works fine with Actinic.

It seems fasthosts windows machines with asp and or asp.net enabled work with actinic and the ones without asp.net / asp do not.

Can any one else confirm this ?

    thanks

    Andy

I had the standard fasthosts windows server and it couldnt run actinic at all ! My problem was a perl script issue, not sure about asp though.
      Kind regards,

I've been trying to get Actinic working on a Fasthosts Linux server for the past 4 days. I've managed to get the site up there but the big stumbling block is the checkout SSL page........it doesn’t look good

          Andy,

If you do a search on this forum for fasthosts you will see alot of people have had problems installing Actinic. This includes myself trying to install both Actinic and an alternative free download store.

I could not get either to work correctly and eventually gave up and went with one of the actinic hosting partners to host my site.

At least they will be able to offer better support !

          Good Luck

            Bun..
Are you using fasthost's SSL or a third party's like Actinics ?
Can you let me know how it goes please , as I'll be wanting to do the same.

            Newsbloke,
yes I had a perl script error too, but I 'think' it must be down to the permission on servers with out asp or asp.net

            Dave
            Do you recommend one ?

            Thanks everyone

            Much appreciated

Our site is hosted by pinbrook.net who are one of the companies recommended by Actinic (see www.actinic.co.uk)

We had a look around the forum and were impressed with comments of existing pinbrook customers and also the contributions to the forums by Jo @ Pinbrook.

The hosting account was setup quickly, pinbrook e-mailed me all the necessary network settings and even when I had a problem on SUNDAY afternoon I got a response (not expected by very gratefull)

Its early days yet but we are very impressed !

As mentioned previousy look around the forum for comments re hosting companies but I would recommend someone who recommended by Actinic

              Regards

              Dave

                Hi Andy,

I intended to use Fasthosts SSL but after 4 days.......sorry, 5 days of trying to get it to work I'm slowly giving up. All the indications suggest that I'd need to put the whole Actinic site on Fasthosts SSL.....not really what I was looking for. I've had a few emails back from Fasthosts asking me to checkout:

                http://xtreme.fasthosts.co.uk/kbv.exe?wrap=1&id=225 - actinic on linux
                http://xtreme.fasthosts.co.uk/kbv.exe?wrap=1&ID=738 - actinic with ssl

This I have done but still no joy. Fasthosts still insist that it can be done but I'm getting to the point where I'm looking for other options. My last mail from them was as follows:
                -----------------------------------------
                Dear Customer,

                Thank you for your email.

Unfortuantely we can not provide the level of support you need to get your Actinic package working - you will now need to consult the Actinic documentation and support.

                Regards,

                Xtreme Support Team
                Fasthosts Internet Ltd
                --------------------------------------------

LOL!! I feel like banging Actinic's and Fasthosts heads together......as I'm in a piggy in the middle situation

Let me know how you get on?

                  Chris Dixon

Chris is it possible that Actinic could contact fasthosts and try toget them more inline with other isp's or explain exactly what actinic requires or would like to see to operate fully including SSL

There are many of us who use fasthosts, but many more experience problems when first starting with them or changing to ssl.I would think it's in both companies interest to have a meeting and sort out these problems, otherwise both companies loose out with disgruntled customers

I know you cannot do this for all isp's but fasthosts is one of the larger ones and i would have thought well worth a mornings call

We have contacted Fast Hosts in this regard several times with the intention of identifying issues and get things working so that our customers dont end up facing complications and have really not been able to get anywhere with them or get to a resolution

Fast Hosts are well aware of all that is required to run an Actinic store on one of their Servers, Windows or Unix/Linux. It all works fine as long as FastHosts SSL is not involved. If you intend to use SSL I would suggest another provider or to simply go for a PSP which will do away with the hassel of configuring their SSL to call back correctly to the non secure part of the server.

I know this is not much help, this is to let you Actinic users out there know that we have tried.

                    Kind regards,
                    Bruce King

                      Linux Is Your Answer

                      Greetings

You guys need to switch to Linux, i've had all the issues you are talking about. We are Running Actinic Shared SSL on our site now which works perfectly. The thing to do is swap to a Linux server with Scripts Enabled... You then change the permissions on your cgi-bin. This can be checked out by actinic if you just export your Network Settings to them. They will then run a little Hello World Test Script to make sure it's working...

So rest assured, i am with Fasthosts & have managed to get SSL script etc working...

                        Hi Shannon,

Indeed, I've been having all the same problems as listed above. I'm no expert....far from it. Just had a look at your site (very nice) and went to the check out page (which is were I'm having so much difficulty) Noticed that when I went to the page were you enter the credit card details your sent to:

                        https://secure.actinicsecure.com/cgi-bin/sp000001.pl

I'm very, very new to Actinic so please excuse my ignorance.....but is this not Actinics shared SSL?

Thanks Bruce, Nice to no you have tried

I run five sites on Fasthosts 4 linux and one windows and have no problems with the service except initial configurations ( i am sure they have a magic button under their counter, which solves actinic problems) but will be looking for my own ssl in the future and reluctant to move isp if possible

Maybe the broadband speed increases in the future will mean you dont have to worry about having the whole site on ssl

                            SSl Fasthosts and Actiic

                            Hello Bun,

Hope you are making some progress. Yes I also figured out and have seen a few posts to suggest and confirm that if you want to run actinic on fast hosts with ssl you need to put the whole site into ssl.

I also don’t want to do this.

I think I’m going to go for the option like Shannon, host the site with fasthosts as I don’t really want to swap ISPs, then use actinic to handle the SSL (http://www.actinic.co.uk/products/sssl.htm) assuming I have understood everything correctly and this is possible?

Let me know how you get on.

Thanks for the feed back everyone.

                              Hi Andy,

That's exactly what I've done. I'm running Actinic on Fasthosts Linux but have opted for Actinic SSL. If anyone has managed to get the SSL working on Fashosts please explain how you did it
