FTP Timeout errors - Help Needed

Hi, I have been trying to upload my site (unsuccessfully) and have now managed to get the furthest ever, but am plagued with FTP timeout errors. The load sequence seems to go through to either the 5th stage "reviewing files..." where it will occur straight away, or the last stage "sending catalogue files..." where it will occur at some point during the file load. Any one got any ideas?

This is the error message -

Unable to connect to the FTP server "allhistoric.co.uk". The operation timed out

try enabling passive ftp and see if that helps. If it doesn't it could be to do with firewalls or router settings.

Been using passive FTP - also have dissabled the firewalls for the upload. Router settings - have tried with two different routers. The Zoom router seems to get further than the Netgear.

Ask your host to check FTP timeout settings on the server.

Managed - after several hours of patience - to load the site.

Just tried to do an incremental update that failed again due to time out errors and that has bought the site down!!!

Make sure your router has the MTU set to 1500. Sometimes there's a problem with this.

Hi, MTU is set to 1500 - don't know what is causing the problems - I have now uploaded the site and hopefully now only need make incremental updates (that, fingers crossed, will work without problem). Cheers for all your help and suggestions.

if you have the opportunity try uploading to a different host (mayne actinic trial space) this will help you to isolate the problem to your isp/host.

if timeouts are caused by your isp/host, consider a change of provider as it could mean you are hosted on an overloaded server which is not going to help you in the long term

I have had similar issues with one of my 4 sites for some time, all on the same server. Actinic are investigating it at the moment. I tried all the possible FTP settings options but still have the problem. Like you, after a long time the site eventually uploaded fully.

Have you checked that your Internet connection is stable, as I have been told Actinic needs that.

This is the reply from 1and1:

Perhaps it would be helpful to put a file named .ftpaccess in the webspace.
With the text "AllowStoreRestart on" without the quotes. That should
alieviate the problem. Sorry for any inconvience.

How do I do this? Will it work?

Create a text file in notepad that contains one line with the text given to you by the 1 and 1 tech people. Save it to your desktop using any name you like.

From your 1 and 1 control panel, use webspace explorer and upload the file you just created to your acatalog directory.

Once it is there, right click it and rename to .ftpaccess

I can see no reason why it would not work.

Thanks for that - have now done this in both acatalog directories

Let us know how it works - quite a few of us are on 1 and 1, and this could be good to know.

Doesn't seem to have had much effect as yet - still managed to stall during update procedure.
