Section boxes

Hi, How can i create more section boxes?
I am using the "smart" theme and i only have 4 boxes
I would like another two. But when i go into design|options|Site default and try to add another box it says that i can't as there is no space!

I have seen some sites that have loads of boxes down both sides.

So how can it be done?
