I'm using version 7.0.1.0.0.0EGSA Catalog and have around 6500 items each in it's own subsection. Navigating through the section tree is becoming painfully slow, even just expanding and collapsing sections takes around 15-30 seconds in some cases. Is there anything I can do about this? I noticed it happening when I changed the site to give each item it's own subsection in order to have a single item on each page so suspect this is the cause but I'd rather not go back to multiple products on a page. I don't use the preview feature.

I believe 7.0.1 had a bug that slowed things down. Some people also tried making the preview refresh manual rather than automatic and fixing ODBC problems.

An upgrade will probably fix it.
