Do I need an SSL certificate?

hi there, I am new to actinic, and have been using the trial version, we are just about to buy actinic catalog, however i would like to know if I need an SSL certificate, we are hoping to take online orders and process them offline on our PDQ machine, but I am really confused on wether i need to purchase an SSL Certificate or not, I have read some of the posts regarding this but being a newbie I dont quite understand, as I am totally new to HTML and ecommerce etc!!!
sorry if I seem a little dumb but could someone please let me know (in basic terms)!?
