Error returned from SMTP server (1: 501 Error decoding Username parameter. )

Not sure where to start with this one, really don't have a clue what the problem is. Came accross it testing the mail form and was quite horrified Anyone seen an error like this before?

I did try, but couldn't found a solution in this instance. I'm currently using 'localhost' as the SMTP, which seems to be working fine, so for now i'm going to stick to that
