    Inserting a marquee

    Hi,

I have been advised to insert a marquee in the source of my page at the very bottom just before the </body> tag. I was given the marquee to insert, and I put it into the Act_Primary.html template, saved it and uploaded my site. However when I now view the source of my page the marquee is still not there. I have tried uploading several times and have refreshed the page in my browser. Why would this text not have appeared? What could be going wrong?

    Thanks,

    from Fiona

How about first creating a basic non Actinic webpage (outside of Actinic) with your marquee code in and see if it shows in your browser.

Thank you for your tip but I wouldn't have a clue how to create a webpage outside of Actinic.

Why would the marquee not be uploading? Am I inserting it into the right template?

Duncan is suggesting that you test the code for the marquee to ensure the code works before worrying about why it doesn't work within actinic.

If the code works then your description of what you have done should also work.

Have you got a link to the page you uploaded so we can see what is happening?

You have the code you need for the marquee - try this attached page see if it works, then replace that marquee code with your marquee code and see if it works.

Edit - can't upload an html page - change the extension of the attachment from txt to html.

            Hi,

I thought by adding the marquee text into the act-primary.html template it would appear on the bottom of every page of my site.

However, some alarm bells rang when you asked for a link to my page! I have now tried viewing the source of other pages on my site (beyond the home page) and the marquee text has successfully appeared on them all. It is just the home page that it hasn't worked for. Is there a separate template for that?

            My home page is www.EasternLink.co.uk

            Thanks for all your help,

            Fiona

Does not appear for me in any page (IE and Firefox). Try removing " width=1 height=1 direction=up" from the start of the marquee tag and I think it will work!

I've just had a look at the marquee that you have included on your pages. I would highly recommend you think carefully before including hidden text of that nature. It is very possible that you will be penalised by search engines using techniques like that.

                    I can't see it either...

although when i refreshed the page to check I noticed a load of text which quickly disappeared.

This looks fishy and as Duncan says could be a SEO banning offence.

What is the purpose of the marquee....

Incidently marquees are as popular as pop up boxes they can alienate visitors

Thank you so much! The marquee is now appearing for me for all pages in IE and Firefox.

I am quite worried about what you are saying about the marquee text being banned by search engines. I found a guy through a classified ad on the internet who has promised to get my site into the top 10 on the search engines in a month for free. Now that's an offer I can refuse as I have tried to implement all the advice I have found on this for the last year with little result! Well, the first thing he has asked me to do is add this marquee text...

I think I will tell him my concerns...

                      Thanks for highlighting this,

                      from Fiona

This is getting to be as popular as the "Hi, my name is Dr. Nmbunga the only relative of King Nmbunga who left me $50m and I want to share it with you my friend" .....

This one seems to go .... add in very dodgy practices into the site and you get an instant rise up the Google ladder ... Google realises you are spamming the listing and drops you like a ton of bricks .... you then pay the SEO companies thousands to rectify what they have done in the first place.

Not all SEO companies are like this - but this type of tactic is extremely suspicious.... best rule of thumb - don't hide anything on a web page

A marquee will instantly date you site by 10 years - they have long been replaced by animated GIFS and now Flash images - these are better visually but don't hold the sway of having text as a marquee - hence your guys suggestion to use

                          The connection has timed out

The server at www.easternlink.co.uk is taking too long to respond.
