Google Sitemap - Unsupported Format

I have used Mole End site map generator. The file was uploaded to my root directory. The file is called sitemap.xml.

Google has returned a unspupported file format.

Here is an example of the breakdown:

each page has the same result

Can anyone help.

I haven't used Jan's generator but your welcome to look at my file to compare against if it helps:

It looks quite a bit different, although it was created a long time ago using an online utility IIRC - Google accepted it then no problem.

I can't see anything obvious. You have more lines than me eg priority etc

How did you generate your sitemap?

Thanks Geraldine - I set background colours (BGCOLOR) in the BODY and TD tags in Act_Primary, Fragment and Product templates.

The problem appears to be the '-' signs on every line of your file. If I add these to my sitemap.xml, I get the same error as you.

If you view a sitemap.xml file using IE, it will automatically put these "-" signs into the page but these are 'page controls' that allow you to collapse sections of the file as you view it. They shouldn't be in the xml file itself.

Did you cut and paste the contents of your xml file using IE at some point? If so this will have caused the '-' signs to appear in your xml file.

Other than that your sitemap looks OK to me.
Try deleting the '-' signs.

Yes this is my new site map (not the mole end one). I did cut and paste it from the online version to notepad. I will try and cahnge it

I use GSite Crawler from http://johannesmueller.com/gs/ for a real quality sitemap. Google seem to be happy with it, never refused any site I have submitted yet.

Funny dashes still seem to be in the file.

I am cuurently trying the G Crawler package which is currently running. Its seems to be doing something that looks good and looks very complicated but is taking a long time. I will keep you posted!

There still seems to be a problem. If I click on 'more' in google next to the error message it gives me this message. Does anyone know what it means?

The requested URL /docs/en_GB/stats.html was not found on this server
