Advice on shifting site to new server.

    Hello there,

I am going to be moving an Actinic shop site from one server to another, new IP address etc., for a customer, and was wondering if you can give any advice in terms of things to look out for, plus what is required on the new server? Will the site function if it is simply copied?

I did do a test just now on the soon-to-be server and got:

    Method Not Allowed
The requested method POST is not allowed for the URL /cgi-local/ca000001.pl.

    Thanks in advance!

You should check that the new server has the ability to run cgi- scripts.

Then upload the site in the same manner as you normally would from your PC.

Change the network settings to replace the domainname with the IP address ( I assume you have a dedicated IP on the new server whilst the domain name is still associated with the old nameservers on the old server.)

Thank you very much for that...

The server is actually a VPS (pretty much standalone FreeBSD host) and I have set up the cgi-bin for the virtual host already, so we should be fine.

I am not on site in the offices of the customer so will have to direct him perhaps as to what to do... is there a page here with instructions of what to do in the application?

Also, the default FTP path is not the root of the web folder for the account... is it possible to specify a subfolder in Actinic? I presume it connects via FTP?

      Again, thanks in advance!

I would test network settings from your PC using a 30 day evaluation if you don't have your own copy of actinic.

Once you have established that your network settings upload to your designated paths, you just send these settings as a txt file for your customer to save to dusk and then import (using the import feature on the network settings dialog box)
Also, the default FTP path is not the root of the web folder for the account... is it possible to specify a subfolder in Actinic? I presume it connects via FTP?
I'n not sure what you mean by this so I haven't answered

That's okay, downloaded it and noticed the ability to specify the paths etc.

Until the DNS records are updated, is it possible to redirect the old site to the new for customers using a .htaccess file?

Will this cause problems with order numbers?

Thanks so much for your help.

I suppose what I'm asking is, if I change the host to an IP address in the settings, does this mean the site itself will NOT reference the domain name, but rather the IP address?

I can easily redirect the site to the new, but this will all fall down if on the new site a page has a link in the shop site which refers back to domain name

Watch out. This Robert (Site-HostUK) appears to be bombarding the Forum with sales promises I very much doubt he can keep.

His only non-spam post was a few weeks ago asking for help as he was unable to set Actinic up on his own server.

I think I may add a tag line to my signature which says something like "We've been hosting Actinic sites since 1998"

Robert could put "We've been hosting Actinic sites since 2 weeks last Wednesday"

                        Hi there again...

I have done the server move... DNS now pointing to new server etc. etc... and most of the site functions as it is supposed to. All the web configuration ran through without a hitch, and network settings complete successfully.

However, when clicking on checkout or cart etc., the perl script is displayed as text and is not actually running...

                        Any ideas?

Just noticed that the button for the checkout points to the old cgi-local path instead of the new cgi-bin path..

What is required to fully update the site with all the new settings that were done through the web configuration?

                            Thanks

There is also something wrong with your CrossSellPro installation. When I click on customer also bought, I get a popup with symbols and the machine want to download the cgi script.

You say the network setup test works? With a cgi-bin path, not cgi-local? What are the permissions settings on the cgi-bin? Should be 755.
