If you have old pages that are no longer in your catalog you can either direct them to your home page or push the browser directly to another specfied page.

You can look in the google cash of your site. Locate any pages which google has indexed but are no longer active on your domain. Then create a redirect in .htaccess file and specify where you want the browser to be directed too. This can be done page by page or site wide.

do a google search on.htaccess to learn the command and how to use it.

    Hi Brain

Thanks for that. Unfortunately I think it's a little late to use an .htaccess redirect as I've just checked my rankings in Google and although my old pages are still indexed......they've dropped that far down the rankings that it's hardly worth redirecting them. On my old site most of the pages were listed within the top 10 on Google......but since swapping server and cart software they've virtually disappeared from Google and my new ones I can't get in there

Initially Google did list a few of my actinic pages....and ranked them quite well. But all of a sudden they were dropped, apart from my homepage, and I'm having trouble getting them even indexed now

      Hi,

I'm confused - there seems to be conflicting opinion here
Is it OK to wrap H1 tags around Netquotevar:Productname in the Product template??

What about search engine compliance - as I have read a few threads recommending to use these for the product short descriptions

There will always be differences of opinion on SEO and H1 tags is an area where you need to take care. They should be used for major headings on a page and use larger bolder text. If Google detects that you are hiding the tag eg using CSS to make the text the same size and weight as the rest of the text on your page then you are running a risk. If you over do the use of the tag on the page, as may happen if you have many products on the same page then again you are running a risk.

Perhaps I should wait until all my pages are 1 product per page before putting the <h1>, <h2> in the Act files.

USe the proper page format convention for the tags and use the proper size for the tag and you should be ok i.e.

H1 (font size 14) bold "Actinic Breadcrumb"
h2 (font size 12) bold "product name"
            body "product long description"

Only use one h1 tag per page. use the proper order of tags in the page first h1, then h2, then h3. Put the tags in the css and define them properly with a greater size font for h1 and less for h2, h3.

Also make sure you syncronize the title keyword phases with the product short description for best possiable results.

I would produce a new product and section layout template in Actinic. Then use the new template as your updating the catalog in the new format.

Welcome to the world of SEO. There is no black and white, people need to research the subject and make their own plan. Stick to the guidelines for use of H tags and you should be ok - abuse them and Googles webspam team catch you

Is it possible to hid the subsection name from the thumbnail template. I have given each subsection a keyword phrase that is sometimes relevant to the specific product within the subsection but often more relevant to the whole section eg a T shirts may be given the name punk baby t-shirts or punk baby clothes.

                Thanks

your sections should have descriptions that actually describe the section, not keywords you want to target for SEO.

if you have one product per section it is easy enough at product level to target for that item, then use sections for more general terms.

For example punk baby clothes and punk baby clothing, punk kids clothes, punk kids clothing. It would be crazy to have a section for all of these. So I have given some of the subsection these names along with punk baby t-shirts etc. Do you think there is a better way of dealing with this?

                    Thanks
