I have changed all my links to useful text. eg rather than 'here' I have put 'cool baby t-shirts'. Does google see the link text or do I need to do something to my Act files like I did with h1 and h2 tags for product name and section names etc.

Google will see them as links as they are and give page rank to the page that they link to. Do not over do the H1 tags as you could run the risk of a Google penalty.

So the link text makes no difference as I read somewhere to use useful phrases

I have put an H1 tag round my in Section Name in Act-Section and a H2 tag round my Product Text in Act_ProductLine. My pages will be one product per page with thumbnail sections (in progress). What do you think?

YES it does. The link text should contain the keywords for the landing page.

On the subject of links my Dad has linked to my home Page from his site www.countryactivities.co.uk. (see bottom left hand side). I was hoping to inherit a better rank from this link but it doesn't even appear on google link to my site. Do you know why?

Could it be that links from a site selling Kama Sutra games and Bedroom Bondage toys is not related to your site

you will only gain link popularity from a related site - following the Jagger update last year Google is very particular about linking sites. Linking just to gain link popularity which is what you were attempting here, is NOT the way to begin a link marketing campaign.

My Dads site is about outdoor activities. Its seems he has allowed my brother to link as well! I will sort that out. What a faux pas!

Your Brothers site is not linked to your Fathers it is part of the country pursuits site. See the url:

This is indexed by Google and will be classed as the content of the site.

You need to link to related sites ie Clothing

Yes I have just been on the phone to Dad. My brother has taken over the management of the site! I have asked him to remove the link to my site. It is not my objective to just get any old links. Although the following links are not listed by google I have tried to approach relevant sites eg

Although I admit that I have requested free links from shopping sites.

Yes they are our main customer. We do direct dispatch for them so I'm not sure if they will link. The buyer wasn't too keen when I set up my web site as we used to only supply wholesale. However, there is no harm in asking.

has a rank of 3/10 which was 0/10. Some of our affiliates link to this page. So perhaps my efforts are starting to work!

Dont push your luck - you are already getting business from them. Go to the next most trafficed site and get a link from them etc etc etc.

page rank is not the aim of linking. Linking is a resource for your visitors and will bring traffic from other related sites. DO NOT base your marketing efforts arround page rank.

Do you have a good monitoring package fitted to your site ie who what where and when are your visitors coming. This is the first priority, without it you are blind.

I was only trying to increase my page rank because I was told that without page rank google would not list my site.

My monitoring is done by changing the questions customers are asked when they place an order; which search engine did you use and what keyword. Around 70% of customers complete it. Most of my business comes from Adwords. From this I am able to find out how many visitors I get and which are my prime keyword phrases.
