    No server connection LINKSYS WRT54G

    Hi

Installed a router yesterday. Tried to connect to the store today to update and we cannot get a connection.

The server is live and well (checked via FTP client)

Anyone can assist us please, running out of options. The error message reads:

"a connection with the server could not be established"

As I stated, the server is up and running. My host is Techno Web (if they are looking in and wish to offer some tips )

    Regards
    Daren

The issue here is the router at your premises. I doubt very much if the host has any bearing on this.

It sounds as if the router is blocking access to the Actinic. Have you done a search in the forum on routers and on your error message to see if any suggestions raised in the past help?

here's a thread about a similar linksys router it may offer a clue

Sounds like the router firewall - try turning it off

do you have a manual with the router?

pdf or other, you could try a search in the manual

talking to the linksys support now. The manual is very basic, but I have swtiched off the FW and still no connection. Just trying to find out how to open up port 80 (for FTP I think...)

            FTP passive is also enabled.

            Cheers

              Still no joy guys.

              Progress so far...

1 firewall CANNOT be disabled, you have to forward ports. Done that

2 Had to set up a static IP, done that and all connections work OK (to the www using IE)

3 told NOT to open up port 80 as it is already open ( )

Still getting, could not connect error message.

Anyone using the Linksys router? Do I need to specify a proxy server? Do I change anything in my network settings (actinic) or do I throw it our the window......

              Thanks

I use the same router (although with non standard firmware) and have no problems. You do not need to open ports for ftp unless you are acting as an an ftp server.
In miine under security I can enable or disable the firewall - but it is enabled. I also have no port forwarding configured for the Actinic machine. It should work 'out of the box'.
Are you running a firewall locally in your PC? If so and running a local firewall such as zonealarm you can put the new wireless network into your trusted zone and lower the security for that.
I presume from your post that you can connect via an ftp client is that correct?

                  Hi Duncan

Yup, can connect using Dreamweaver fine. But Act keeps bouncing.

I have switched off all features in the securty (4 check boxes) turned off XP firewall and still nowt....also turned off Port forwarding, gone back to DCHP and still nothing.

Upgraded firmware. Did you change any settings in Actinic? Going banana's here mate...

This is the message I get

                  ####
"An error occurred when trying to connect to the server. This can happen when the server is unreachable or you have set up an SSL server, but this server can not accept SSL connections, or Windows is confused about proxy settings. If you have Internet Explorer or another application configured to work with a proxy, the settings should be the same for Actinic. Please check your connection first."

                    Hi,

Assuming you have not made any changes to your Actinic network file settings since installing this router, go into Web | Configure Website Details and ensure that both checkboxes are unchecked (this ensures you use the original and previously working settings).

Allow the software to go through its checks and see if it gets to the end.

If that does not work, then go into Advanced | Network Setup and change the Passive FTP connection to the opposite of what it is now, click Apply and then OK and answer Yes to the question and then do the Web | Conf again to see how it gets through this time.

BTW: As you know we frequent the forum quite regularly, but if you wanted our input on this problem you were having, you know you could just contact our support anyway, even though it is not a fault with the hosting, you know we generally have slants on different things even if not an issue on our end, so no worries and hope this helps via the forum

                      Hi Guys

Would have called you but did not know if you worked at the W.E., your inout is always welcome.

As stated, I know it is NOT a hosting issue

In reply to the stages (no changes made apart from installing Linksys router)...

1 WEB CONFIGURE : Stops when it asks for (IT KEEPS ASKING FOR) proxy/http details, we select NONE and it then stops running stating cannot connect to the internet.

2 PASSIVE FTP: Done both, still no success. Same reply when checked or unchecked.

Boy I am confused. I can browser fine, connect to servers fine using DW etc, but ACTINIC is telling me we can not connect to the internet at all??
(PS the router is hard wired to the ACT machine and wireless for laptop which works A1)

                        A possibility..
In your network settings on your PC have you set the router IP address as the gateway address - if not try that.

                          Hi Duncan

All setting back to default, firmware appears to be the latest.

Gateway on the router is set as such. linksys have drawn a blank, they have no idea. May well be a case of removing the router

                          Completely flumuxed..

                            I'm getting confused.

So to summarise: (correct me if I'm wrong)

Laptop wireless - actinic works oK
PC wired not ok with Actinic but ok with ftp client and browsing, Fixed IP, gateway configured to be router's fixed IP on private network side.

                            Router:
                            DHCP to ISP
                            Fixed IP's for clients
                            No IP forwarding

In Actinic do you have a Proxy (HTTP or FTP) configured - None is what's normally used.
