Search Boxes on home page

Hi, I'm sure someone can answer this in a flash.

How do you put a search box on the main page of the site like it is on every other page (and why isn't there one there by default?)

View | Search Settings | Search Options | Show Searching on Frontpage

Failing that option you can simply copy and paste the search box code from a generated page and copy into the template accodingly
