    Problem

    Hi

    We are running two sites on two actinic programs and using one computer to upload changes to the site and to download the orders. Everything is running fine but we want to be able to update the site and download orders from the site from a different location.

    Any advice on how we can go about doing this?

    Yes, that is how we run out site. You set up one PC as the 'master' one which will update the catalog, and the other one will process the orders.

    Under Business Settings -> Options you will need to set up the master one so that Catalog Maintenance, Design Changes and Network Setup are all ticked, but Order Processing is not, and on the other one, just tick Order Processing but none of the other 3.

      But is there any way I can update and download from a different location?

      Basically I want to be able to put new stock on the site and download the orders from home. But I also want to be able to come into work and update the site and download orders but use a different computer.

        You can transfer a snaphot between the 2 to keep them up-to-date ... if you do any work at home and add to a snapshot and bring into the office at the morning Actinic will see a change on the time stamp and force you to upload the whole site again to keep the local and remote in sync

          You can download your orders at both locations, but you won't have a copy of them at the other location, so depending on the number of orders you get, that could be a logistical nightmare, but you can only have the catalog (the website) on one pc and can only upload it from that pc.

          My understanding is to edit the site from more than one pc you need a system which holds the database online rather than on a local pc. We were talked out of that type of system, but I coming to the conclusion that it has it's benefits if you are working from more than one location.

            Let me see if i have got this right.........

            So at the end of the working day I take a site snapshot then go home, put the snapshot onto my home computer add some more changes then do a snapshot the next morning before work and take that into work and uplaod it when I get there? And just keep doing this every day i want to make changes at home?

            Can I send the snapshot in a email?

              Or easier - put it on a laptop and take the laptop back and forth between shop and home. I am always concerned when you start taking copies of a site and copying it back and forth - the potential for mistakes is rather high.

                That's right. A drawback is that you will probably have to upload the whole site each time after loading the snapshot as all the files are then seen as new.

                You might be able to email the snapshot - but it's a large file. You could put a copy up onto your server and download it again - memory sticks are cheap now though so are probably the best. Otherwise buy laptop - just use the work pc to download orders and use the laptop to maintain the site.

                  Keep in mind that the snapshot will contain lots of private information if lost! So emailing may not be a good idea - as Duncan says the best option is to use a USB flash drive ... quick, cheap and portable
