What is the scope of the actinic search?

Does anyone know where actinic searches for search words?

for example,

does it search in sections?
in the 'cookie trail'?
or only in the product details?

Wherever it does source it from the search is way too broad IMHO.
I would like to be able to limit the seach to just the title and CUSTOMVARS if I so choose.
Including the long description by default (and not having the option to EXCLUDE it), makes most searches way too obscure on out site.
Customers searching for a book title are linked to every book description that contains one or more words from that title, which in most cases is an unworkably large range.

I'm getting the opposite problem - despite my product page being stuffed with keywords (mostly customvars, but also text from the section) the product can't be found at all using any of the keywords!

I have found another thread on the customvar problem which may shed some light on this...
