Colour Selection

I've got a couple of products with a colour choice. I set them up as per the manual - a main product and some colour-choice hidden products belonging to a selection. Here's an example:

When I sell one of these, two line items are shown on the invoice - the main product and the choice colour item. Each has a quantity of '1'. Is this right? Should I take the main product out of stock control?
