This is largely controlled by your provider, the speed of their network and the bandwidth available.

Put very crudely , a 100k page on a high spec dedicated server with a huge pipe will serve a page much faster than a 100k page on shared hosting where it is fighting for resources

Just a quick note to say many thanks for all your advice on this.

I have optimised all the images (buttons, etc) on my site plus the homepage and I feel load up is quicker.

I am going to follow up with Claranet to see if there are any server side options for me to speed things up further.
