    1&1 url masking

    Hi all

    has any one had the problem of when using 1and1 to host your sites the url does not change when you move around your sites.

    I contacted 1and1 regarding this and they sent me this fix

    > To disable URL masking please add these codes to your domains index
    > file.
    >
    > <SCRIPT language="JavaScript"> <!-- if (parent.frames.length > 0) {
    > parent.location.href = location.href } //--> </SCRIPT>
    >
    > It should then look like this:
    >
    > <HTML><HEAD><TITLE></TITLE></HEAD> <meta http-equiv="refresh"
    > content="0;URL=index.php4"> <SCRIPT language="JavaScript"> <!-- if
    > (parent.frames.length > 0) { parent.location.href = location.href }
    > //--> </SCRIPT> <BODY> <BR> </BODY> </HTML>

    I tried placing it into Act_Primary.html & Act_BrouchurePrimary.html but I still get the same problem

    Does anyone know how to fix it

    I also noticed that when I try to view the source code on the live site al i get is

    <!--%1&1 IN2SITE FRAME%-->

    What sort of package are you on? The only reference to in2site I can find is an opt in package addition.

      David - are you referring to the situation where you have say, mydomain.com, which is configured in 1&1's control panel to "forward" or "point" to mydomain.co.uk, which is where you have your shop. When you go onto mydomain.com you end up in the shop in mydomain.co.uk, but you only ever see mydomain.com in the URL box?

        I am running the professional package with 1 and 1

        I did add the in2site addition to my package a few days ago.

        I tried disabling it from with-in the 1and1 control panel but the issue is still present.

        Does anyone else who is hosting with 1and1 get this problem?

          Did you remove the code that you added into Actinic to make the In2Site package work? And then re-upload your site?

          I also looked at In2Site when I first started and very quickly disabled it - check the status again from your control panel. I will look up what I had to do to get it turned off. (Seem to think I had to write an email to the In2Site service provider).

            Bill - was there any particular reason you disabled it? Did you enable the "free" version or did you subscribe to the full version which seems a lot more useful? We've been toying with the idea of enabling this system but it does seem to take over...... Mark H

              You have it in one Mark - it took over and restricted what I could and could not do with the site. If I can dig out my old emails on this, I will post more detail.

                Since I disabled the site2info the error in no longer their.

                Is there any onthr programs similar to in2site that allow you to live chat with your customers ?

                I purchased the full program of in2site, waste of money though as half the time it did not work properly and when it tried to chat it was very tempermental.

                Correct me if I am wrong on this but wouldn't the url masking cause problems with spiders as all you can view of the source code is the in2site bit

                  BoldChat or Skype (I'd go for Skype myself)

                    Boldchat looks good - not least because the system seems to work with just a few lines of code in the page, not the page running inside a frame! Isn't Skype a telephone (VOIP) rather than a chat system?

                      URL Masking is not good for the SEs

                        Aren't there two different issues here - it is the in2site program which is putting the whole each page inside it's own frame (which must be bad for Google etc), but 1&1's own URL masking (whereby for instance if you are forwarded from a .com to a .co.uk you still see the .com in the address bar) is a completely different issue and less of a problem since Google will still index the .co.uk pages (which is where to shop actually is) separately?

                        PS we stopped using 1&1's control panel to take people from the .com to the .co.uk and now use an htaccess file in the .com

                          Skype is VOIP - and a good chat system.

                            1 & 1 give you the flexibility to control most of how visitors percieve your webspace.

                            They offer some "add-ons" that I have found less than useful, but they are opt-in items, which you don't have to use and which can be disabled.

                            There is no URL masking forced on anyone that I have seen.
