    Invisible Text in Fragment ?

    Hi

    Yesterday I put this problem out there but due to the site being down they lost the Question thread …………..here is my problem yet again …………

    This is embarrassing – I had a person design my website using Actinic as I am a novice and yesterday I added a NEW fragment to give more info to the following web page which is made up of a Brochure (Page Details) containing 4 fragments.

    http://www.guitartechnicalservices.co.uk/

    The NEW (5th) fragment was at the bottom of the list, so I moved it to the top. ……… I think this is when my problems started but can’t be sure ……. On website preview it only shows the LINK which is the ‘Professional Set-up’ (in orange). All the text is missing – i.e. not visible on the page, although it is still there in the text box - for all the 4 fragments. The layout is set (unchanged) at ‘text only’ - and has been applied to all. I double checked it all, the forum (which is great) and the help pages and cannot find the answer.

    Now I have had some success in the 1st Fragment, by deleting the Fragment Title (nothing input) and changed the layout to ‘text & title’ and the text appeared! I thought it was sorted – even though there is no name to the Fragment. Then I tried to do the same to the other fragments to get the text to re-appear BUT in doing so a Warning !... The fragment must be specified! ……sign comes up so that won’t work either
    Note: the text in the fragments has never been altered or even touched!

    I was asked to look for non-closed quotation marks (in an href for example) - Ref. the 'Edit' section on Notepad - but did not find any - but I had not altered the program in the script anyway.. I was also asked to clear out the browser caches, which I did, including all temporary files.

    The Brochure Page of Set-up and Services is broken down into 4 fragments - all of them ‘text only’

    1. Prices (the only fragment which has a LINK in it )
    2. Additional charges
    3. Other services
    4. Minimum Charges

    I changed the 'Price' fragment type back to 'text and title' and all the text appears back again but, of course, the title appears in Bold and this is not how I had it before messing with it and not how I want it either .....it was normal before, where it was text only and it was VISIBLE ! ..... as soon as I change it to 'text only', all the text disappears except the LINK i.e. PROFESSIONAL SET-UP.

    I have now looked at the other Brochure Pages within the site and where they have text ONLY fragments the same thing has happened – i.e. the text cannot be seen unless it is made text and title and then the title appears in Bold. Exactly the same problem, but occurring everywhere in the site, even when I haven’t touched anything! So whatever is the problem is affecting the whole Catalogue. Where should I be looking – is there a file or place to change this – bear in mind I am at the beginning of the learning curve – any help would be much appreciated

    The most recent thing we have tried is downloading the latest patches but this hasn’t provided any answers – or even any clues.

    PS Thanks to the person that was trying to help me before the Actinic Community went off line (even though it hasn’t given me any answers yet!)

    Peter,

    Can you make a screen shot of the left hand content tree from inside Actinic, and also copy and paste all the text from the price fragment into a text file and attach both to a thread response.

    There is nothing visible on the website that explains what has happened, but it looks as though the designer may have used embedded html, which has been broken by the link you added.

      Could also be a modified template that has been used. Do you have a snapshot just prior to your changes you could temporarily re-instate and take a peek at what was happening when all was well - don't forget to take a new seperate snapshot (different file name) so you can re-instate and changes, orders etc

        Hi

        the screen copy was too big for upload so I used PDF (hopefully attached). It wasn't clear to me that he Snapshot was a backup tool until I uploaded the latest patches. Hind sight is the exact science! will do better next time.

        hope this helps ............

          I see numerous errors, most to do with commenting out.

          1) This bit

          </tr>
          <!--<tr background="pxl_green.gif">-->
          <!--<td height="20" colspan="2" valign="bottom" align="left" background="pxl_green.gif"><img src="spacer.gif" width="1" height="20"></td>-->
          </tr>

          is leaving a <tr></tr> without any <td>...</td> content. Move the commenting out, to surround the <tr> and </tr>.

          2) In the line

          <td width="175" align="left" valign="top" <!--background="pxl_black.gif"-->>

          you cannot comment out bits within tags. Delete the entire

          <!--background="pxl_black.gif"-->

          bit instead.

          3) This bit

          <TR>

          <!-- <td height="100" align="center" valign="top" background="pxl_black.gif"><br>
          <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="CUSTOMVAR:ACTSTDWIDTH" align="center">
          <tr> -->

          <!-- NETQUOTEVAR:REGISTEREDLOGIN -->
          <br><table width="CUSTOMVAR:ACTSTDWIDTH" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0"

          is broken because you're trying to put visible content within a <TR> tag. Such content can only go between <td> and </td>

          4) In this bit

          <!-- NETQUOTEVAR:POWEREDBY</BODY>-->

          you've commented out the required </BODY>

          There are probably more like this (it's hard to see when you've pasted the code in without any form of alignment - see below). You should work your way through all the table code making sure every displayable bit is within <td> and </td>

          As this is an important template, it may help enormously if you work your way therough the <body> ... </body> area indenting every <table>, <tr> and <td> (and outdenting the corresponding </...> tags). This will clearly show up any misnested or missing bits.

          E.g.
          Code:
          <table>
            <tr>
              <td>
                  Text
                  text
              </td>
              <td>
                  <table>
                     <tr>
                        <td>
                            Text
                        </td>
                     </tr>
                  </table>
               </td>
            </tr>
          </table>
          Also post all technical stuff into the forum between [ c o d e ] and [ / c o d e ] markers (type them without the spaces) as this preserves the layout.

            Peter,

            You seem to have inherited quite a mess.

            I was looking for the content of a fragment [in particular the part where you entered the LINK], not the template code (see attached picture of a fragment)

            You have actually done yourself a favour by posting what you did. If the rest of your site pages are in a similar sorry state, then it may be worth your while having someone competent in Actinic give the whole snapshot a check through for more errors. I am sure you can find several people here on the forum who could do this (for a fee, of course).

              Hi All

              Many thanks - I put the Actinic Prog. in its raw state on my other computer and cut and pasted the brochure and fragment code to Word, put it on portable hard drive and over-pasted into the Corrupted Site Template and the invisibility text appears !!!!!

              So, yes its obvious to those who know code there is something wrong here and I will now have to learn a bit more about it – the one thing I was going to do but haven’t had the time.

              Just over-pasting has its problems because right-half of the wood effect top banner and Guild logo are missing! The exercise has taught me a lot about import snapshot as well.

              The idea of someone auditing the text for a fee sounds interesting - what would I be looking at as a ball park figure ?

              Thanks for the all the help and I will now tooth-comb my way through it with the points you have raised - thanks again and I will keep you posted on the outcome.

              PS: sorry about the alignment of the code it must have happened in the copy/paste to word & forum,

              Thanks again

                Just to stick my idea into the melting pot. As there are so many errors (designer created?) it would be worth considering taking the site back to an original Actinic template and going on from there.

                This would certainly correct them and any others which may be lurking about. It would also avoid you having to get your hands dirty in the html code.

                  The forum rules don't allow a direct answer to that, all commercial stuff has to be take off to email. If you have been reading the boards for a while, you will have a good idea of who knows the software. I would email maybe 3 or 4 and ask what they would charge and when they could fit you in, (add a little detail, like the number of pages you have and how many of those you think are affected [it's probably ALL of them]). You will need to Export a snapshot for them to import and work wiith. Several may also price Malcolm's option - depending on the number and severity of the errors found, this can work out cheaper and faster.

                  If you want to learn how to do it yourself, First thing you need to learn is NOT to use Word. Word will change the code when you save your file. Use NotePad if you do not have a dedicated HTML editor, even though with NotePad you have to remember to change the file type to all files before you press the save button.

                  To do it yourself, I would export a snapshot from the current working machine and do a snapshot import on the other machine, then choose one page at a time and work through.

                    Well here is where the fault lay .......The <font> tag was responsible for the missing text as the color somehow changed to the same as the background = Invisible text !!! I think it happened because I moved a new Fragment into the first postion of the 'text only' and this seems to affect all the fragments that are 'text only' that follow after it .

                    Its logical when its found - I still dont know why the drag and drop fragment created a different color text = same as the background ............but at least its sorted for now - I will take on board the points made here and am learning fast - I had a look at the original Actinic text and I see there are odd times when <tr> is not followed by </tr> but will start a new <tr> is there another rule which is the exception?

                    Thanks to you all

                      Well done - finding that took a bit of concentration!!

                      The pages where you found the <tr> followed by another <tr> - are those two tags in the same template file? If yes, has it been altered from the original (you can find the original in the Formats/Themes/name of your theme folder in Program Files/Actinic v7/?

                      If it is an interface between two different templates, and they are both original, Actinic might be interested.

                        When you get time you are best removing the inline <font> tag and moving over to external CSS as this will allow site wide changes in the one location without having to trawl through all the lines of codes in the various template again

                          With reference to the text the <tr> followed by another <tr> was in the original Formats/Themes/name of your theme folder in Program Files/Actinic v7because as I have been in the deep end and having to put my head round the HTML as a complete novice, I was a little suprised at this find and hence I asked the question about an exception to the rule.

                          I think it was in the home page on Curves Theme but unless it causes a problem I am leaving it well alone.

                          As for CSS that is as new to me as HTML so thanks for the tip.
