Quicky Q re Actinic on 2 x PC's

I'm currently developing an Actinic site. As I am working from two locations (not at the same time) I thought I could take a copy of the entire Site1 directory with me to use at whichever location I happen to be in. As I am not taking orders or anything just yet will I be okay doing this ? Each PC would have the same network settings for uploading to the web site.

Just wanted to check that I'm not creating trouble for myself by doing this.

I've done this with no problems.
File > Snapshot > Export Site
Then import the file on the second pc.

I wouldn't want to suggest I am lazy or anything, but copying the Site1 Directory to a memory stick cuts out the 5 or 6 mouse clicks involved with importing or exporting.

If I do as suggested in my first post above will I be okay ?

In testing this 'appears' to work - I just wonder about the 'unseen' elements ?

The only bit of essential info that's not in Site1 is the stuff in Housekeeping / Security (it's in the Registry). So simply make sure that this is the same on both systems and you're there.

Incidentally I was recently thinking about installing Actinic (or just Site1) onto a USB memory stick using the same drive letter on several systems. So that all that would be needed would be to move the stick between machines.

With the advent of large bootable memory sticks (such as the 8Gb one I saw on a member site a while ago) I was considering trying to load my whole operating system and apps on one. Most new machines that have BIOS USB support now and can be booted from a USB drive. What's next....

Sorry to but in and hopefully not deviating from the topic too much, but;

Having bought an external hard drive I was thinking about moving the Actinic programme completely onto this and then using it in the office and at home, forgive me if this is dumb, but would that work? Or do I need to put it on a laptop to use in different locations?

In theory, you would need to install it on the external at home to make the required registry entries, then reinstall on the external at work to make the required registry entries there - then it should work... as long as the drive always gets the same id letter on the same machine.

Also purely theory, but if the drive will have the same letter on both machines, you could export all Actinic registry entries from one PC and import those same registry entries on the other.

Doing this, you lose the physically separated backup advantage of having two separate installs and using snapshots.

You'd have to uninstall then re-install Actinic onto the drive.

Personally I'd try moving just the PC's Sites folders contents onto the drive (i.e the root of the drive contains all the foldrers you normally see in Sites).

Then rename the PC's Sites (to keep a backup) and create a new empty Sites folder.

Use Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer Management / Storage / Disk Management to map the empty Sites to the external drive (right click the drive and choose "Change Drive Letters and Paths" then "Add").

Repeat the same thing on the other computer and you should now have a Sites folder that can be moved between systems.

I tried this and it seemed to work OK.
