Is it possible if someone enters a product ref in the search box to automatically go to that product instead of displaying the search results page?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Presumably you are referring to the manufacturer's product ref. and not your website product code. Its possible, but its going to require some hefty perl script programming.

we use the manufacturers product code in the product reference field. We know nothing about scripts so this maybe beyond our capabilities.

There is something in one of the manuals about creating your own special searches. It is intended for adding special fields to the Advanced Search. The .cat files have a REFERENCE item in them - I guess this is the Product Reference

Presumably this is the Actinic product reference field and you are using the manufacter's code instead of an auto-generated numeric code.
