Dns and web servers question

Hi all,

This isnt strictly an actinic question but will involve my shop when I move servers. Can someone explain why IE6 will bookmark the server address instead of www.mydomain.com if someone performs a 'right click inside the page and then add to favourites' ? all other methods of bookmarking are fine.

This has never happened before with the way I set things up and if it relates to a new IE update im going to have to change everything for about 8 sites.

Any tips would be great,

Cheers
Kind regards,

Michael

Thanks Jo,

This will show you exactly what I mean:

http://www.artscraft.co.uk/

Firefox = all bookmark methods use domain name
Netscape = all bookmark methods use domain name
Opera = all bookmark methods use domain name
IE = right click - add to favourites uses server address ?

I am officially confused........

Cheers
Kind regards,

I think I know what the problem is now.
If you do a right click + bookmark in ffox, opera, netscape its fine, if you do it in ie 6 its not but if you move the mouse right to the very edge of the page in ie it will right click + bookmark the domain properly.

Does this mean ie now renders frames differently than before ? It never used to be a problem and I could do anything anywhere without updating dns etc

Anyone had any experience of this ?
Kind regards,

Michael

I suspect it is to do with the fact that the page is framed:

Your browser does not support frames.
To view our web site click here:

http://207.210.84.84/artscraft_test_page.html

So when you right click it is storing the IP url and not the domain.

Yep, but its not me doing the framing.
Its done by the domain host to mask the url and I have been using it for years without fault or error. I can only assume that ie now renders this frame differently (good old microsoft).

Oh well, looks like im going to have to mess about with dns from now on........what a pain !

Many thanks

if you feel you will lose visitors when you move IP you should remove the masked framing and use a 301 redirect instead.

when you move servers use a 301 to redirect visitors from the old url to the new.

The sad fact is that it is unlikely that microsoft will change it.

I can confirm IE7 Beta behaviour is the same as IE6 - the IP is bookmarked.

Thanks Bill,

Heres something to confuse everyone, one of my friends has just performed a test and can right click anywhere on the page and only see the domain name and guess what.....he is using exactly the same version of IE to me !

He also tested all of my domains that use url masking / forwarding and they all bookmark the domain no matter where or how he chose to bookmark them !

Im expecting paul daniels to pop up on my pc and say "now thats magic"
Kind regards,

Michael

Sound more like a PC installation that is not being updated to me

Just a quick idea that can help clear DNS problems.
At the command prompt type

ipconfig /flushdns

This will remove any corrupted entries from your local DNS cache

Then try your bookmark again

Clefty, you have just ended many many hours of frustration
I wish we had a 'flush dns' button on IE 6 !

At least I know its working now.
Kind regards,

flush DNS is not a browser command, it will work on any PC regardless of OS
