ssl checkout or whole site

What works best having the ssl on checkout only or the wholesite?

I use worldpay to process the payment so i don't need the ssl on but I hope that having it present makes the shopper more confident in making a purchase.

Would have ssl on the whole site cause any issues that I need to be aware of?

Hadn't heard that one before, but it will definitely slow down server response times. The extra layer of communication that has to take place has its overhead.

Not heard of it affecting search engines, as they can index https pages, but it will add an unneccessary extra load onto the server and site as it will have to encrypt all pages of the site, which is really just over kill, so on checkout and login is best policy would say and general practice from small to the biggest of em out there.

There are several ways to prevent our crawler from indexing your site or portions of your site:

- create a "robots.txt" file on your web site to prevent our crawler from indexing your site
- add a "noindex" meta tag to your documents
- remove the original document from your web site
- host the document on a secure section of your web site (HTTPS or login)

From the SEO guide of one of the big SEs - I am not saying it WILL prevent indexing but why run the risk.

in place of placing the whole site in SSL, there are other things you can do on the site to inspire shopper confidence

clear links to info pages with delivery costs, encryption methods, contact info etc etc
