Does anyone know of a good site that uses the Java applet?

    Hello there,

I'm exploring different secure ordering options at the moment. Does anyone know of a site that uses the built-in Java applet?

    Thanks,

very few sites use this now.

it is a legacy from the early days of actinic, PSPs, SSL and shared SSL are now the preferred methods of taking payment in secure mode.

To add some history to this, about 4 years ago Microsoft stopped shipping PCs with the required java modules, thus if people didn't have it on their machine they would have to download the said files before they could purchase. Thus actinic introduced their version of shared SSL to offer an an alternative but have left inbuilt encryption there as an alternative (with the proviso that they might withdraw it is the future).

Whilst it is a secure module you don't get the padlock in the browser as you do with https, this does put purchasers off and results in lost sales

Thanks Jo. I was aware that this was the least popular option but didn't realise quite how few sites us it! However, I still need to explore this as temporary alternative (long story).

I use it on one site www.romanticjewellery.co.uk. It does get orders but suffers the limitations as jo describes above.

          Thanks Malcolm - nice site.

When I came to place a dummy order, in order to get to the applet, I unfortunately got the message:

"Sorry, you cannot place your order with a credit card because either

Your browser cannot run Java OR...
          You have Java switched off

Either go back a page and order using a different payment method, or enable Java or use a browser that supports Java. If you are running Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer, you just need to enable Java: "

I'm busy downloading the Java VM as I write this....

Illustrates the problem jo describes!. The site gets several emails a week asking how to fix things, so I think that it does loose orders because it uses it. Another site I have did use it and had similar problems but they were solved when it switched to SSL.

Jan - may be worth checking to see if your host allows shared SSL as a step up from the JAVA encryption - this is often free as part of the hosting package

                Thanks Jont.

Problem is that I've got a new ISP that have absolutely no experience of hosting Actinic. The domain they have provided has standard SSL, which means the whole web site runs under HTTPS. So I'm trying to learn the online order process - are online orders stored for retrieval in this scenario, similar to shared SSL?

If not, the java applet option is an avenue I have to explore.

Are you sure the whole site runs under https? Most servers will allow the standard http and then switch to the https for the cart area.

There could possibly be search engine issues with having your main product pages on HTTPS

                    Hiya Jont,

Am waiting to hear from the ISP re the shared option.

Yes, I think that there might well be search engine "issues" with HTTPS. Am trying to find out what these might be.

Check out http://community.actinic.com/showthr...399#post111399 where the subject of SSL on the whole site is being discussed.

If you are having problems with your host change to one that is used to Actinic

https is a URI scheme which is syntactically identical to the http: scheme normally used for accessing resources using HTTP. Using an https: URL indicates that HTTP is to be used, but with a different default port and an additional encryption/authentication layer between HTTP and TCP. This system was invented by Netscape Communications Corporation to provide authentication and encrypted communication and is widely used on the Web for security-sensitive communication, such as payment transactions.

if you look at your URL in the browser address bar, normally your url will be http://www.yourdomain.co.uk

when it says https://www.yourdomain.co.uk it means there is an SSL cert in place encrypting data

                            s = secure

Matching this thread to your other one about SSL and your inexperienced host.

I feel your best solution is to use Actinic Shared SSL (£99 pa) or a PSP.

this way you don't need to secure your site.

                              see thread
