Special Messages on Checkout Pages

I want to be able to add special messages to my checkout pages for 2 reasons:-

1. I want to be able to put a temporary message there to warn customers of a temporary suspension in shipping due to holidays - but that they can still place their orders, which will be processed later

and

2. I'm having some problems with some customers not selecting the payment type from the dropdown menu - but still entering their credit card data - which results in the credit card data not getting sent to me, even though the customer thinks they have done all the right things - so I want to be able to put a bold instruction on the relevant page.

How can I customise for this? I'm not sure which pages/templates need tweaking.

You can add a message to the checkout page by editing the checkout templates, you do this by going to advanced template manager, if you get the template navigator (this will look like a catalog page which areas to click on) it is under 'other pages' and then 'cart/checkout'. If you get the template manager (traditional looking dialog, lots of buttons on it) then you need to go to the ordering tab and one of the 'order phase x' buttons will be the one to change. I usually put some extra text it to the template and do a local site preview to see if I have got the one I was looking for.

With regard to the payment option, why don't you make credit card the default option, you can do this by moving it to the top of the list in the payment methods dialog - there are buttons on the dialog to move the options up and down.

We are going on holiday soon as well, for three weeks and I don't quite know what to do about my shop. What do other people do?

I made the credit card the default as you suggested and this seems to work fine.

However I'm not sure how to do a local preview of the "ORDER PHASE X" buttons as you suggest - I get a message saying this feature normally runs a cgi script and is not available in preview mode.

How do you get this to work?

Ah - you will not be able to check those pages offsite - sorry I forgot, you will have to load them into test webspace or your live website to test them.

Simple! - don't go on holiday!

... or alternatively, take a laptop with you and treat everyday of your holiday as a part-time work day!

:-) errr thanks Nick I'll cancel my holiday then ;-). I have thought about taking a laptop but 1) I haven't actually got one and 2) I am concerned about it spoiling the holiday if I do take one. I am also worried about it getting stolen as it will spend a fair amount of time stuck in boot of a car as we travel around.
