Hi Rob, welcome to the forum.

You need to be editing the raw templates in the root of the site1 folder as Actinic uses these to compile the pages on the fly from the database .. these are the files starting Act_

Editing any other pages such as in the PreviewHTML or SiteHTML subfolders will always get over written when Actinic next uploads to the site

So are you saying that I can only change the content of a page from within Actinic? - because I don't want to edit the templates - I just want to change content. Surely the content is in the Site HTML files?

I have never used Actinic before and prefer to do my page editing in Dreamweaver.

The page layout is handled by the templates - the product details, prices, company info etc are all kept in the Actinic database and compiled into the templates.

The content is all kept in Actinic in the section tree and then in fragments (text areas) or in each product - product name, description, price, image etc.

You can still edit the template in Actinic to give you the overall design and theme to the site with DW and Actinic inserts the products / sections etc. Once the templates are sorted there is then no need to use DW for the pages.

The pages in the SiteHTML are the compiled pages - editing these will only result in them being over written when you next upload to the web as you are experiencing.

Ok, thanks for the help. That tells me what I need to know if not what I wanted to hear! In the long run using Actinic will make it easier to make changes sitewide but it just means more study in the short term.

I have managed to edit the templates in DW with no problem. What I want to do now is change the content of the homepage. It seems that the only way to do this is within Actinic but it doesn't appear to have a WYSIWYG interface.

When I am designing a page I like to use WYSIWYG for obvious reasons and only fiddle around in the source code if I really need to.

I am making some changes to a site for a client who has been using Actinic for some time so I need to work out how to do this but at first glance Actinic seems to be very complicated.

You can use a standalone homepage created in DW to your hearts content - in Actinic click on the top "house" icon in the content tree and untick "use as homepage"... you can then upload your index.html page via DW.

To retain functionality of the cart, cookies etc often worth previewing a product page in Actinic and then editing the generated page in PreviewHTML folder to retain the various <head> and script features.

Ok, so if I take the existing homepage with all the script etc in it, then make some design tweaks in DW (but leave all the script intact)...untick use as homepage in Actinic, then upload the modified homepage via normal ftp...

...will Actinic leave that file alone and not overwrite it next time an upload is done by Actinic?

If so you have just solved my problem (until the next one comes along that is!)

Yep - once unticked Actinic will not upload its own index.html (note the .html extension and not .htm if creating in DW)

I tend to edit a previewed product page just to ensure all the bits needed are there - depending on the theme being used some of the homepages are a little spartan so using a product page will ensure all the necessary bits are there

Have tried it but when I try to upload from Actinic it says:

"Some duplicate HTML file names have been found and therefore the generation cannot continue.

The following brochure pages have the same page file name as other generated pages:
page: index.html"

and won't let me upload.

Any ideas?

I have already been down this road of creating a new homepeage within DW.

I find that when all is uploaded the "home" button within the Actinic shopping pages return you to the DW homepage - as you would expect. However the 'home' button within any Brochure pages created within Actinic do not function.

Oracle - do you get the same thing ?

What is your homepage setting in Design | Options - Miscellaneous? In the circumstance you describe, it should be set to url with the fully qualified URL for the DW page.

Yes I have had set to full URL all along - I know this should work but can anybody say it is working ?
