Applying discounts

I have read a lot on this forum and in the help files and I have a good understanding on how to apply discounts. However, the one thing I cannot find is whether it is possible to have the product itself discounted. Is is possible to come up with a discount scenario that doesn't display a negative dollar value in the cart but rather a reduced price of the product itself? The reason being is that I interface with our accounting software and it will not accept a negative dollar amount.

I would like to end up with something like;
If you buy a case of 12 you get 3 for free. I'm hoping that I can get the cart to display

(12x) - 25 sq ft element @ $5.00 = $60.00
(3x) - 25 sq ft element @ 0.00 = 0.00

OR

(15x) - 25 sq ft element @ $4.00 = $60.00

instead of what I am getting which is;

(15x) - 25 sq ft element @ $5.00 = $75.00
Promotional discount = -$15.00
