On my first catalog page there is a gap at the top of the page just beneath the header which I would like to reduce. However, I cannot find any br tags or any way to reduce the space further in the relevant html files. I think there must be some code somewhere that is governing this gap so if anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

could you give us the URL please, then we can check the code for the offending <br> or what ever it is that is causing the gap. -

I can't check right now but IIRC if you are not going to be using logins on your site you can try removing:
