Can I Hand Code the Up a Level Button?

I have used hand coded links for my navigation - how can I hand code the Up A Level so that it still functions as the original button?

you can use javascript command history.go(-1) this will take you back one page

or use the NQV for the up a level - you will need to look it up in the advanceduser guide, as I can't remember what it is
