linking paypal to actinic?????

Hello everyone, I'm confused! This is my first posting on here, please help I'm about to jump off the nearest cliff, which fortunately is not too close, so we have some time;

I have built a digital file download actinic site (actinic catalogue, v7, audio store programme)

I am trying to link the paypal site to my site. customers are directed to paypal, make payment, receive confirmation email (and so do I) then the customer is redirected back to my site but digital download does not happen.

I understand the IPN(instant payment notification) is a piece of information that should be sent from paypal to my actinic site confirming payment and allowing download.
