    Perl, threading and Actinic

*** You are using a perl configured with threading enabled.

It seems Perl on my server has been configured with threading enabled. Is this an issue for Actinic?

    Bob,

Have had a check with development on this and they say that the message you see is a warning from the Authors of Perl effectively saying 'Experimental code - Use at own risk'. This version of Perl ought not to be used for a production server. We have not tested Actinic with multi-threading perl but at the same time we have no reports of problems.

Our advise would be the same as the Authors of Perl - Use at own risk.

    Kind regards,

I got this back from Clara engineers
Threading is switched on by default if you are using the RPM distrubution and unfortunately we dont have the choice to enable/disable threading.

We are quite confident that Redhat wouldnt release an RPM if they thought it was an experimental version in their general releases. we would of though that the threading would give these problems with the actinic scripts.

It is probably worth while contacting Actinic re this, just asking for confirmation that their is no problems with running threading and their perl scripts.

At this time we only support the official Redhat approved version. To disable threading we would need to compile perl from source. This would unfortunately also make it unmanagable by Patchlink.
I asked them to check with Red Hat and got this reply
RH would not comment on compatability of the perl program they package with their release and Actinic software. Perl program versions and compatability is something that Actinic will need to advise on.
It seems that their current Perl RPMs for production servers have threading enabled. I wonder if anyone else here is using RHESL-4

The RPM in use isnt from redhat itself, i'm quite sure.
It's from the fedora core experimental release.

performance wise, its no problem. it would only be a problem if there were an alful lot of perl accesses on your server. generally perl is quite stable.

Thanks. Now that I have set the Actinic sites up differently I no longer get the problems, so it is all rather arbitery now.
