    mass email to our customers?

Hello, we are thinking about sending a mass email to our customers. But is there some type of rule about this, whether its appropriate or not? We have placed a link at the bottom of the mail right now - "If you have received this email by mistake or no longer wish to receive new product notifications
from *link*, simply reply to this email with "Unsubscribe" in the subject line". Would that be enough?

The legality of this varies a bit depending on where you're located, but the general idea is that you're free to send email to people who have willingly provided their email address, thus opting in to receive further promotions. You are also required to provide some way for the customer to opt out of the list, but if you're already doing that then it's not a problem.

As to whether it's appropriate, that's an impossible question to answer. We've found that people who have specifically requested our newsletter are quite happy to read it, and that we tend to get a very positive response from it.

If the email addresses are all legitimately provided by willing customers, there's no real reason for them to complain about being contacted, but we've found that a few of them tend to get angry about it anyway.

Ethically it is always best to only email customers who have willingly added themselves to your mailing lists.

However the guidelines are that you can email anyone who has a business relationship with you. But you must always provide the unsubscribe link.

there are guidelines on UK Gov sites if you do a quick www search for them
