Order of products in sections

Any clues how I could automate the correctc display of products within sections on the website so that they appear in a sequence driven by ascending alphabetical order of first a CUSTOMVAR field, and then the short description field. At present I have to manually work this out by gazing at the Content Tree and trying to remeber the value inthe Customvar to position in the tree accordingly.
