Variable order quantities

Hi,
I'm building a site which will contain a very large number of products grouped by type but I can't find a way to have a variable order quantity set against each product. I have successfully created different colours, sizes etc. (as appropriate) against various products but need to allow customers to also select a quantity of the colour/size or whatever that they want. Version is 6.1.5.
I have tried 'Design - Options - Shop Defaults' but find that that both radio buttons are active and I cannot switch either off. I can change from 'text' to image' but this had no effect. The 'Single Add to Cart Button Per Page' is not ticked.
Have run a repair and patched and upgraded etc. all to no avail.
Can someone please help me before I tear the rest of my hair out!!!

I forgot, there's also no 'Add To Cart' button to be seen anywhere.

Not sure about this but try:

1. Business Setings -> Ordering> 'Online Ordering': Allowed

hopefully this will alow you to set the quantity setting in design options -> shop defaults to 'quantity on product page'
