I would include all the 'sizes available' in the full description of the main product - that way the customers would be taken to the correct place when they search.

Thing is, i wanted to use the search settings:searchable properties with choices added from componant names... way of searching. So a customer is presented with a drop down of all available sizes to choose from. This is the most elegant solution i thought. The problem is that the sizes from associated products (which are hidden) arent returned in the search results.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for taking an interest in my problem.
Let me sum up. As i think you may have missed the start of the thread.
ALL my products are available in lots of sizes.
I set up a componant 'size' then set up a search, using a drop down, using 'searchable properties'. This worked fine.
The problem starts when i had some products which came in different colours and sizes. Initially, i had 'size' and 'colour' set up as seperate componants on the same products. This still worked, i could still search the 'size' componant..
The problem... and the start of this thread, was that when i sold out of a particular 'size' and 'colour' how did i take just that combination off the store.
Leehack suggested listing every product in its various combinations as seperate (hidden) products... and then offering them as choices (associated products) from the main 'master' product and from a componant 'size and colour'
This solves one problem, i can now delete red in 5mm as a choice.
However my search is now duff.
If i use the searchable property 'size' i dont get the products available in different colors in the results.
If i use the searchable property 'size and colour' i get all the various colour combinations listed... (i cant just search for 5mm)... and i dont get the items that only have one colour..
If i use both, frankly, it gets ridiculous.
I know i can type in all the sizes as text in the description, and then use the standard search. But this is far from elegant, some items have 15 sizes to list, it looks messy. Also if an item size is out of stock, i have to change the description text or else it will be returned by the search.. not ideal.
I dont much want to list each item in its different colour, I've seen this done but dont like it... some items i sell come in 8 colours.
I just wanted a dropdown listing all the sizes for you to choose from.....
I'm starting to think it cant be done.

Sometimes it takes writing an essay like the one above to spur you into some creative thinking.
So for anyone still listening.... and interested.. i've found a solution.
i add the componant 'size' to the products with 'size and colour' as well.
To stop this extra choice appearing in the catalog i delete the choices.
The version of Actinic I'm using 7.0.3 returns deleted choices in the search results as a bug !! !!
Ho Ho Ho Boom Shanka.
