On issues like this, where it pees alot of people off as it should be standard and not even an issue, i agree that Actinic should be a bit more forthright with their answers.

It can't be hard to sit a developer down, ask him how long it will take to solve the problem and when he can have it done by, add a month to this timescale and then commit to a date by when it will be fixed. This would stop all the moans, requests & gripes and if they could even surprise people by having it released early, it would be a huge exercise in PR and remove some of the overall negative vibe around at the moment.

Communication with users is something they can definitely improve.

Age old problem of the developers v the marketing team.

To be honest I set all my sites to bypass the ordering system and don't touch the inbuilt accounts facilities - we have a bespoke accounting package we use in the B&M which works perfectly for our needs - Actinic is used to promote products and retreive orders only.

That's the easy bit done - now examine the code he has written.
Has he missed a value somewhere that needs changed?
Has he used any global variables that might not have the value he has expected when the process runs? What effect will an unexpected value have on his code and how will it recover?
What variables has he changed the value of within his routine - and where are they next used?
Will the values he has used cause a problem in another script?
What happens if ---- and just designing that part of the testing can take weeks. The testing itself can take months.

There is very little difference in the amount of testing needed for a fundamental change like VAT handling and a full rewrite - like v9.

I can't argue with that, there is obviously a large amount of work that most of us cannot even consider. However, i am presuming that a large part of the investigation has been done, for them to have decided not to do it at the same time as the V8 upgrade.

To me the vat problem only ever causes a minor inconvenience, but it comes up time and time again in the forum. The people with issues on it, need an answer, a commitment and a timescale on the change, no matter when this is or how long it will take.

Persistent problems that have been around for years, constantly gnawing away at the reputation of Actinic are things that it is worth investing the money into fixing as your reputation is one of the most important things in business.
