    No broadband... Use Dial Up?...

We're moving house in a couple of weeks and it looks like our broadband connection may take upto 15 working days to reconnect.... AHH!!

Does anyone know whether it is possible to run a site using dial-up or is it just too slow? We currently use one-stop automation to download/ upload every 10 mins, obviously we couldn't do that but I will need to keep track of stock so I will still need to upload - is this possible with a dial-up coonection?

If anyone's had a similar experince or knows how to speed up getting broadband re-connected, please let me know!

    Thanks
    Richard

Would suggest you get any major updates done before the move, then any updates from then on will be cat file changes and the like for stock, as opposed to uploading lots of html and images files etc.

You can run it on dialup, as the machine will not know any different about how it connects.

You can run on dial up BUT it does take a huge amount of time if you need to do any major work.

No don't do that, it will take you longer to find them, than it will to upload.

Ignore me, most do and get on just fine.

The car wasn't invented before the wheel. Many sites used dialup for YEARS before broadband became the norm. Just set your automation to only upload when there have been changes to stock levels, and maybe with thirty minute intervals for checking for orders?

if you have actinic on a laptop just go to an internet cafe when you have to do heavy duty uploading.

or go an rent a 3g data card for a couple of weeks, the speed on this is better than dialup, assuming you have a slot for it.

yes but actinic has also gown up inthe meanwhile, you wouldn't try to put XP on the Pc using 128 RAM would you, the same applies to actinic and uploading

This is bang on the money IMHO. If a client of ours was to be on your position, this advice would be given to them as it is logical and less disruptive for you.

15 days seems an eternity when you are waiting for completion BUT in reality it is not that long really...

Thank you all very much for your helpful advice! It doesn't seem quite as grim now - you do get so complacent with broadband and, as pointed out, forget that it wasn't that long ago that no-one had it!

                  Thanks again
