UNIX v Windows

I am getting ready to upload my first site and have subscribed to windows and having probs with a url for cgi bin. Should I be using unix?

I believe that Actinic is easier to get running on a Unix server than a Windows one. Who are you hosting with? Try searching the forums on their name and see if anyone else has solved the problem.

If your host allows ask them to switch you over to unix (this is probably better for them also).... as Alan says it is much simpler to get Actinic working on unix rather than windows based servers (it is not impossible but will help you keep your hair much longer)

I am using net benefit and they have agreed to switch it over so fingers crossed I will get sorted!! I am probably being really thick but where do I get the cgi bin address from?

That would be me! Please note these settings are for their dedicated hosting only. If I remember rightly they are be different for shared hosting.

Shared or Dedicated Host?

Thanks for your help! I will upload with these and let you know!. I am really new to all this and starting my website for the first time. I have opted for shared hosting but now not sure that it will be enough? Can anyone tell me if I should be looking at a dedicated host? I am looking to launch with approx 150 items in my shop and eventually grow it to about 500 lines. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Naomi,

Sounds like you should be fine with shared hosting at the moment. If you are just launching it's unlikely you will get the traffic required to really justify a dedicated server yet so stick with the shared and upgrade when you feel it is worth it. We ran with shared hosting with Netbenefit for years and never had any problems with speed etc.

PS I am fairly sure those network settings won't work with shared hosting, I would give Netbenefit a ring and check, they should be able to tell you the correct settings over the phone.

Dear Naomi,
If it's any help we used Netbenefit shared hosting for 6 years with no problems, with over 1000 product lines. It's only when our monthly bandwith use increased to over 15GB that the pricing structure made a dedicated server a better option.

Thats great thank you! I dont know wether you can help. I am just testing the connections and cant find the "path to cgi-bin" anywhere? hope you can help!

You will have to log onto your server using the username and password provided and then look for a folder called 'cgi-bin', this is sometimes within a folder and if it is the path to the 'cgi-bin' would be

<folder name>/cgi-bin/

else

/cgi-bin/

if the bin is in the root.
