Has anybody had any luck integrating with this. Paypal have just been on the phone, and they are sending me flow diagrams etc. Will I need a third party software to integrate with this?

Normal Paypal is integrated into the later patch levels of V6, to use PaypalPro you will need V8.
I don't actually know what Paypal Express is, but if its new it will not be integrated in to v6 -
