Associated Products and Discounts

This may have already been addressed but i cant find it anywhere.
Our site is setup with some associated products as options.
For instance, we sell posters and you pic a design, choose your size and depending on quantity you receive a discount. Now with our discounted posters section we have a system where by the discount is worked out on quantity ordered which works fine.
Our customised posters however we are discounting different amounts depending on quantity AND size.
After speaking to Actinic Support they said we should use Associated products which looks fine. So we have set up hidden associated products for each poster size and price per poster depending on quantity ordered.
Our problem is that when a customer adds posters to the cart, say qty 3, it works out the correct amount. When they add 3 more different posters it works out the amount based on the cart contents not an individual product. So instead of working out 3 posters at £6 per poster and another 3 of a different design at £6 per poster, it is working them out as 6 posters of 2 different designs at £4 (which is the price for quantity of 6 or more of the same poster design.)
Apologies if this sounds complicated. Hopefully someone will work out my ramblings.
