Time to do a backup takes ages....

every night before we close we backup our actinic catalog by doing...

    file
    snapshot
    export site

but every time we do this it takes a very long time and crashes a lot, is there any easier or better way to backup site or stop this taking so long and crashing please?

try compacting the database and run the export snapshot again

Try highlighting the 'Home' at the top of the Content Tree before compacting or creating a snapshot.

Common problem - the above should sort it. If not there are several threads on the subject

                15 minutes for 300 products?

                Sounds like something is amiss.

Follow the above info, post your system spec and let us know if there is any improvement.

On a different note, I take it you are not linking to an external db?
