Search Words ..... what gets searched on ..

    Hi All,

I'm using V7, and read a few threads on Search words, and pretty much getting the jist, but but not completely getting the answer I was looking for.

    Q. Can anyone confirm that when you use the NQV:SIMPLESEARCH that this searchs the Product Titles only?

    Q. I think I know the answer to this, but just to confirm, is it true I cannot add any content to a Product simply for the purpose of Searching in Actinic, to get around plurals, syntax, other user keyword uniqueness. For example, create a CUSTOMVAR called SEARCHTEXT and for the Value of a product say a "rubber duck" have things like:
"rubber ducks, rubber mallards, ducks made of rubber, duck, ducks, plastic ducks....." etc etc you get the picture?

    Thanks, Simon.

OK, digging a little deeper, leading on from above ...

    Q. Does the prompts:

    Index Extended Product Info, and
Add All Parent Section Contents to Product Text when Indexing,

found in View > Search Settings answer my point on extra search text, over and above Product Title text?

    Thanks, Simon.

I need to do the same thing - I just tried it today, setting the customvar as 'searchable' and 'use customvar', but the product did not show up in the search results...

So it it correct that the search will only find this text if it is actually displayed on the screen? Or should it be able to find it whether it's actually displayed or not? (ie. did I miss something).

If this isn't going to work, is there another way around it?

Errmm - it's a SEARCH facility. I has to FIND something. I does this by LOOKING in the page contents.

The point being that "page content" is everything displayed on the screen rather than the entire contents of the HTML?

That is correct - page content does not include html tags and properties, nor css definitions. Published text only.

ok, just didn't know if it searched the actual page contents (eg. the html of the page), or if it held all the keywords in that big ol' search file actinic keeps for the search facility which, lets face it, could hold anything actinic deisnged it to hold - including customvars that are ticked as 'searchable'... it's technically possible, but I have no idea how they designed it.

and it would make sense to design it to do what we're trying to do - we're trying to help the customers (letting them find what they look for no matter which exact phrase they chose) without doing the alternative which is to confuse them by stuffing the page with different phrases for the same item...
