Custom input fields in product pages

Hello,

We are currently looking into making some products for our website a bit interactive for the customer.

Is there a way we can have a text input field on the product page, that when filled out, and the product is added to cart, the input from that field will go through to the shopping cart and appear on the order when we download it?

We are going to be offering customers Gift Certificates, and we want to be able to allow the customer to enter a personal message that will be printed on the certificate.

when i headshot after a posting, its becasue you cleanly took out the problem. i'm actually headshotting the person you answered, since a single response to answer is the stylish equivalent of a headshot.
