    Data From Website

    Hi
Does anyone know if there is anyway of extracting data from our website. We have had our computers and back ups stolen and find ourselves with no back up of the website! Any help would be appreciated.
    Regards

I know the horse has well and truly bolted but you should not keep the backup on the same computer or on external media next to the computer ... largely in case of fire but if the scroats fancy nicking your CD's, external drives of flash disks at the same time.

As Jonty states, back up every element and store it in a few different places.

But no help to you right now.

Have you got your product details stored from an import or did you pop them in 1 by 1?

          Regards

... but the good thing is that even though you can't upload, you can download and so can continue to receive and process orders (unless you use the post office I guess).

Not much help to you, but buy yourself a 2GB usb pendrive. I have a Scandisk one which came with encryption software. I keep it around my neck during the day and in the bedside cabinet at night. Everytime I shut Actinic I always click make snapshot and put it on the pendrive. I keep the last 10 backups on the pendrive.

The encryption thing is the most important aspect since your backup will contain shoppers card details! Although I change them to *0000 them after the order is processed.

PS. Feel your pain, we were burgled 25.09 and they went through our place with a fine toothed comb - must've been in there for hours. Fortunately because of the site layout they could only access on foot so didn't take the PC. The copper said your run of the mill tower PC are unlikely to be nicked now.

its useful to also keep a snapshot at your year end, and keep one per month also

this only applies if you manually process cc yourself, if you use PSP you don't have to concern yourself with the safety of card detail as you don't get it. Although you should still protect your shopper name/address etc for data protection issues

what are they after, bentleybloke? laptops? or other hardware?

I tend to use several smaller ones on a rolling rotation. Using a different one each week. I just worry too much about relying on a single stick.

At home, I have a crappy old computer with 4 x mirrored 80gb drives.

Its running FreeNAS, and its a breeze to set up. it handles backups across my LAN. 4x safe backups and also military grade encrypted.

                            http://www.freenas.org/

If you have a spare pc ans some cheap harddrives, beats a £5,000 backup server. Since its a network service, you can hide the (yellowed and scruffy) case in something safe. like... err, a safe.

And before you all go off on some 'i'm not a geek' rant. Its SIMPLE to set up. its easier to install than setting your SKY+ to record the latest episode of Battlestar Galactica.

If in doubt, get someone else to build it for you.

I bang everything into my networked Maxtor (400gb). Not portable but wired well away from my pc and is accessible wirelessly....stores backed up and copied onto mini me (smaller maxtor drive and then fired onto a remote server of mine), data saved using the quick back up button (just one press and my entire HD is copied or sections I set in preferences)...bet you can't find it.

With multi pc access, no fuss, no muss.
