How are the products sorted in the search results page?

I can't seem to find this question anywhere, pretty sure it's allready been asked though, but here goes.

How are the products ordered in the search results page? For example if I type in a brand name, all the correct products come up, but they aren't sorted by product name, or cost etc. I'm assuming it just uses the unique ID assigned to the product when its created in the DB, if I'm wrong and I can actually sort the results by something more useful then please let me know!

I believe they are sorted by reference number but I can check this with development to see if this can be changed.
