    Receipt page hangs

When taking an off-line credit card payment, at the "Your receipt will be displayed shortly" stage, you just wait and wait. It says:
"Applet COM.Actinic.Catalog.EA started". We then get the basic email alert, but not the full details one, and the customer doesn't get an acknowledgement email. We are hosted on Fasthosts. Any ideas anyone?

Get rid of the java encryption applet and get yourself some SSL.

The Java applet can cause problems and shouldn't be necessary any more.

The only downside to using SSL instead is that on V6 it puts the CC capture form on the payment choice page rather than on the next on when chosen. This could encourage people to use it rather than your PSP. (A PSP is another must have if you don't have one).

Whilst this is sound advice there are 2 other considerations here

1 Fasthosts do not allow you to secure the checkout only with SSL you have to secure the entire shop which is not a good idea

2 SSL will not be PCI compliant so when your bank send you all the requirements for compliance you will have to move to a PSP anyway

This ahs been discussed in depth before and even Actinic suggest not using the java - remove it and get a psp such as HSBC etc for the reasons jo suggests

Wooah! I get the message. However... I am planning to replace Actinic as soon as I can get the webshop in our finance application working (with PSP!), hence the fact we're still on V6.0. Your comments have helped me see what's going on, and actually the Help file is useful here. I think we could muddle on for a bit longer and I've found where to edit the "...Your receipt will be displayed shortly. ." wording to say ".. your receipt will be emailed when we process the transaction". (Design, Text, Encryption (java) tab). Thanks everyone.

Whilst searching for something else, I came across this thread, only a couple of weeks old - as a V7 user I don't read V6 or V8 threads as a rule. But for anyone searching in the future I feel that I need to add my experiences, as I have raised these issues on the forum elsewhere without definitive success.

I too was hosted with Fasthosts, from Feb 2006 I think, until Dec. 2007. I had no real problems with being a Fasthost-served site once the initial set-up issues were resolved - I have never contacted FH directly as I go through an independent reseller, a former work-colleague of my wife's - he sorted any issues, and the cost did not seem at all unreasonable compared to those I could see advertised elsewhere on the interweb - about £120 p.a. unlimited bandwidth. A couple of brief downtime periods were about it, when I didn't know if it was me or them.

From the launch of my site in March 2005 I used the built-in encryption, being too tight to go for SSL.

Over this period I experienced the issue raised here, and also had very erratic Order Numbers with many numbers missing - I thought these were incompleted orders. Comparing the progress of automated numbers with actual orders shipped, about 20-25% were lost, either through not materialising, or being downloaded but never paid for, in spite of sending Payment Request emails.

I was never able to replicate the hanging issue described here, on our own machines - six of them - though we had very many 'phone calls from customers saying 'I'm still waiting....' so I know what this is about.

During Summer 2007 we installed Norton 360 on three of our machines and immediately encountered the same problem on our own website for ourselves. I raised this issue here too, suggesting Norton was to blame (other threads on that subject also available).

Towards the end of 2007 (early December, worst possible time I know) two things happened. (1) Fasthosts had had their security breach & upset a lot of people (2) I can't remember the cause but I crashed the site. The decision was taken to move hosts including going for SSL at last. Another story.

The point I have to make is that since this (traumatic) changeover, I have not experienced one single missing Order Number or a check-out hang-up or a customer's criticism of that.

Rock on! - go SSL, not Java, and don't host with Fasthosts, and don't use Norton 360

                about 20-25% were lost
I remember a couple of years ago when we were discussing this subject and the general feeling was that about 15% of orders were lost due to using the java payment. It has likely risen due to the increase in web shopping.

Many of the issues relating to Actinic are non version specific so it always pays to read all forums.
