Moving LH hand menu and other stuff...

    Hi there

I'm trying to get rid of whitespace and move my search and left hand menu item up the page. I've tried cutting and pasting into layers, deleting paragraph spaces in act primary and P_index, but I'm sure I'm missing something (!).

Also I deleted my home page and just went with a catalog page http://www.dailygrooming.co.uk/acatalog/index.html This is the one I want to show.

But the home page still exists in the search engine.
    http://www.dailygrooming.co.uk/

Will I have to wait until the search engines remove it from the index?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    David

Pages prefixed with 'P_' are preview pages and a complete waste of time trying to adjust as you should be working on the site templates and only the site templates.

As for your home page, it still exists and i can visit it, Google hasn't learnt telepathy yet, so how exactly do you expect the page to be dropped from the index?

      Thanks for clearing that up.

I'm inexperienced (but not stupid). I understand how google trawls indexes and updates pages, I wasn't sure whether I'd not done something or whether a file may have been left over in a folder somewhere.

If you (or anybody else) is prepared to help me by telling me which templates will allow me to move the LH bar and menu up the page, along with the bits of code responsible I'd really appreciate it.

I've been successful by creating layers, inserting code and moving items around in the ActCatalogBody.html page, but I cant seem to find which ones control the above. Because of the way these items link to others, I'm not sure if it is wise for me to apply the same principles.

If you 'Inspect' the site online with the Firebug add-in for Firefox you can see what templates may be causing this. Check Act_LogoImage, Act_CatalogBody and Act_Primary first. (I presume you may have created some custom templates from teh originals)

Firebug like Duncan says is your best bet as you understand more what has created the page. You have a large area that finishes just above your sitemap links etc. this is the area that is forcing everything down so you have that white space you do not want.

You have probably not closed a tag correctly as Firefox is also showing a jumbled layout towards the top. It's probably a really silly little thing and all will play ball once it's found, it can be like that at times.

EDIT: above the search box you have a load of open and closed <p> tags, i presume you have been pressing return without realising what is happening when you do that. If you remove those it all jumps up.
          They look like - <p></p>.

If you want a page to be removed from the Google index, you need to remove the page off your website or block spiders from accessing it. You should also have a 301 redirect in place if this is to be a permanent change. If i can access the page, then so can every search engine, UNLESS you have told me not to etc.

            Hi Duncan

            Thanks for trying to help.

This site was set up way back by somebody else. From memory I think a standard template was used and modified.

I have installed firebug, and looking at the code, I'm assuming that I need to modify something in actprimary. I've found and highlighted the search button in there and I can see the menu bar (I'm assuming that this is the list of tablewidths at 100%).

Highlighting beween the search button and the menu in firebug I can see the code but not the white space between (I was expecting para breaks). I also checket the catalogue body, but I'm now certain it has nothing to do with this.

I have included my page code below. Is there anything that I can't see that is obvious to you?

At least 30% of your code could be removed David from that template, it is doing nothing at all, just bloating the page. If you see any tag that opens and closes and has nothing in between it, then it is a dead tag and should be removed.

You also have some references to your C: drive in the code, which i cannot understand at the moment. It's a right mess to be honest, remove all those redundant tags to get you started, that will make it so much easier to decipher and help you out.

I don't know how to do a 301 redirect yet, but I suspect fasthosts will be able to advise.

                        David,

You need to set up an htaccess file. Have a look at this thread:

                        http://community.actinic.com/showthread.php?t=20693

(Out of interest I tried searching the forum for 'redirect' and didn't find anything helpful, but I did find the keyword 'htaccess' and a search on that was more useful)

                            Hi David

'301 redirect' is what you'd need to search for, that is guaranteed to bring up some results, if not in the forum, then definitely on Live Search. I would not personally do what fasthosts are recommending to you, i would rather move hosts to one that did allow 301 redirects. They are recommending a META refresh i think, which is frowned upon by the SEs as i understand as a lot of dodgy redirects have used that method in the past.

But as you seem to have found out, not having a home page is madness and something you should do as a very last resort IMO.
